What is Kratom?

Kratom is a tropical evergreen tree (known as Mitragyna Speciosa) native to Southeast Asia. For hundreds of years, natives of Thailand, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia have chewed on its leaves to relieve minor pain, lift mood, aid relaxation, and boost energy.

Today, Kratom leaves are typically dried, crushed, and used in teas, capsules, and liquids. The herb is unique in that it can be used for a range of purposes depending on the dosage. In lower doses, Kratom produces stimulant-like effects. In higher doses, Kratom can lead to calming, euphoric-like states.

Read down below to find out some of Kratom’s benefits from cutting-edge research.

Benefits of Kratom

Relieves Minor Pain †

In a 2016 study, mice were injected the psychoactive compounds contained in Kratom. Through various tests, the mice showed numbness to pain, without addictive behaviors.1

Promotes Energy †

Kratom has traditionally been used throughout Southeast Asia by laborers. By chewing on dried Kratom leaves, this gave them a caffeine-like energy boost in order to combat work fatigue.2

Promotes Relaxation †

A study by Prince of Songkla University in Thailand showed that lab rats injected with Kratom’s active compound Mitragynine showed increased relaxation in their neuromuscular junctions.3

Supports a Balanced Mood †

A series of tests by Universiti Putra Malaysia showed mice exerting antidepressant affects after Mitragynine injections.4

Supports Immune System †

The University of Science, Malaysia conducted a study finding antioxidant and antibacterial properties of alkaloid extracts from Kratom leaves.5

How Does Kratom Work?

An alkaloid called Mitragynine in Kratom is at the center of its ability to relax the body, focus the mind, and boost one’s mood. Mitragynine in Kratom stimulates the opioid receptors in the brain.

Opioid-receptors are known for their ability to relieve pain and flood the brain with reward chemicals called dopamine. Think of opioid receptors as you would the ignition in a hybrid car. In order to start the car, a unique key (called opioids) must fit the ignition to turn on the car.

Traditional opioids turn on the car’s electric engine, causing positive benefits such as pain relief and euphoria. However, they also turn on its gas engine, causing the negative side effects associated with drugs such as heroin or morphine.

Mitragynine in Kratom is an opioid agonist, meaning it’s able to turn the electric engine on while leaving the gas engine off. More simply, Kratom excites the same opioid receptors in the brain, to promote a balanced mood, manage everyday aches and pains, relax deeper, all without triggering the traditional side effects associated with other opioids.
